Beginner: Starting Out

You're just beginning! You can understand and use very simple, everyday phrases to say what you need. You can introduce yourself, ask and answer easy questions about yourself, like where you live or what you have. If someone speaks slowly and clearly, and is ready to help you, you can have a simple chat.

A2

Elementary: Getting the basis

Now you can understand common phrases about everyday stuff like your family, going shopping, or places near you. You can talk in simple, normal situations where you just need to swap basic info about things you know. You can also describe simple things about where you come from and what's around you.

B1

Pre-intermediate: Getting more independent

You can now understand the main points when people talk clearly about familiar things like work, school, or hobbies. You can handle most things you'd need to do when traveling where they speak the language. You can write simple paragraphs about things you know or like. You can also tell people about your experiences, dreams, and give short reasons for your opinions and plans.

B2

Intermediate: Speaking more smoothly

You can understand the main ideas in more complicated writing and talks, even about things you study or are interested in. You can chat with native speakers pretty easily without it being hard for either of you. You can write clearly and in detail about lots of different things and explain what you think about something, giving reasons why.

C1

Advanced: Talking with confidence

You can understand long and difficult texts and know what they mean even if it's not said directly. You can talk easily and without having to search for words much. You can use the language in different ways for social situations, school, and work. You can write clear, well-organized, and detailed texts about complicated topics.

C2

Intermediate: Speaking more smoothly

You can understand almost everything you hear or read without any trouble. 

You can take information from different places and explain it clearly in your own words. You can talk without thinking much, very smoothly and accurately, even when you want to show small differences in meaning in tricky situations.
